Barree Township, Pennsylvania – Kenneth Ayers, age 52, killed his two-year-old son and then himself during a child custody exchange with his wife. Ayers, age 52, was estranged from his wife over charges of domestic abuse, but he was granted visitation rights to their son.

The incident took place at the home of his mother when Mrs. Ayers returned to pick her son.

Police believe that an argument ensued, and Mr. Ayers pulled out a .40 caliber handgun which he used to attempt to kill his wife by shooting her twice striking her in the arm and leg.

In his unbridled condition, he then shot and killed his son and attempted to drive off with the boy’s body in his pickup truck.

When Mrs. Ayers attempted to retrieve the boy’s from the back of the truck, Ayers shot her in the face and even fired at his own mother but missed.

ABC News describes the scene.

Kenneth Ayers placed the child’s body in the back of his vehicle but the wounded woman retrieved the body before Ayers shot her again in the face, police said. He also fired at his mother but missed.

He was found later in a nearby township dead from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hollie Jo Ayers was transported to a hospital and expected to survive, according to police.

Huntingdon County District Attorney George Zanic said: “Words can’t describe the scene … heartbreaking.”

Zanic said that Kenneth was under a protection-from-abuse order that forbid him from making contact with his wife. The 56-year-old man was still allowed to have supervised visits with his son once a week at his mother’s house.

As part of the Police investigation, an autopsy will be conducted to determine whether Kenneth Ayers was under the influence drugs or alcohol.
