Pastor Who Threatened to Burn Qurans Arrested
Pastor Terry Jones, the Evangelical church leader who announced plans to burn almost 3,000 Qurans as a protest on the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, was arrested by police as he drove towards a park in Mulberry, Florida. Arrested along with the 61-year old Jones was 34-year old Marvin Sapp,Jr., also a minister. Both men were driving a pickup truck loaded with copies of the books sacred to the Muslim community which were already doused in gasoline in preparation for burning. Jones first announced plans to stage the book burning protest in 2010, but called off that effort before doing anything.
Officials in the U.S. Military have repeatedly asked Jones not to stage his book burnings, since anti-Muslim actions that he and his congregation took in 2011 and again in 2012 sparked increased hate-crimes against members of the U.S. armed forces serving in the Middle East. Many members of local Polk County has expressed outrage and dismay that Jones wanted to bring his anti-Muslim book burning activity to the Sunshine State. Local police officials have not stated the exact charges that Jones and his companion are facing, but civic leaders are urging everyone to express more tolerance.
