75 year old woman from Henrico, Virginia, was attacked by a rabid raccoon and the way she reacted will shock anyone!
Cas Overton was walking through her local botanical garden and defended herself against the rabid raccoon by strangling it to death with her bare hands. Overton was very brave to do what she did and prevented the rabid raccoon from hurting anyone else.
Overton was walking down a path that she usually takes in the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden when the rabid raccoon rushed at her and attacked her leg. Overton stated “I tried to shake it off and did not realize how violent it really was”.
She then moved away from it and grabbed its neck because she knew if she ran she would not be able to get away from it. She even stated that if she ran from it, it would just tear her to pieces. Overton is a huge animal lover and it was the last thing she would ever want to do, but when protecting oneself and others ones primitive part of one’s brain will kick in and do what they have to do.
“As I moved backward away from it, I grabbed its neck and I knew that I couldn’t get away from it,” she tells the Times-Dispatch. “If I ran, it would be faster than I would and would just tear me to pieces. So I threw it to the ground and I strangled it—with both hands.”
Just in 2012 a troop of Boy Scouts stoned a rabid beaver to death, but that is nothing as extreme as Overton’s story. Henrico Country has now confirmed that the raccoon did have rabies and was very dangerous.
Overton did not even expect the raccoon to attack because she was admiring the birds in the trees and then out of nowhere the raccoon attacked.
When the animal attacked she tried to shake it off, but when it grabbed her pant leg and bit her at the same time. She was taken to a hospital and received her rabies shots. Definitely a time Overton will never forget and a story she can tell everyone about how brave she was.
