martin luther king jr day of service

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On this day of service, people from all around the country will celebrate the life and progressive accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Thousands of events will be held in his honor including parades and live performances.

Between 1955 and 1968, MLK lead the American Civil Rights Movement. The Baptist minister organized numerous peaceful protests and demonstrations in an effort to end racial inequality. His ideologies were influenced by his Christian faith, as well as the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi. Sadly, on April 5, 1968, MLK was assassinated. However, his death propelled the American Civil Rights Movement further rather than halt it, ultimately reaching important milestones.

There are many ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. MSNBC provides a list of events taking place in major cities like Philadelphia and Atlanta. Some of these events are hosted in order to give back to communities in honor of MLK. There are volunteer opportunities to feed the homeless, and fun fundraising events that donate the proceeds to different causes.

If you would rather stay indoors, you can find many of MLK’s speeches online including his “I Have A Dream” speech. Allow him to inspire you on this day of recognition.
