John Boehner endorses John Kasich: Today’s number in politics
The Butler County Republican Party held its annual Lincoln Day Dinner Saturday night honoring former House Speaker John Boehner and former party Chairman Carlos Todd.
The event was held at West Chester’s Holiday Inn before a sold-out crowd.
Saturday was Boehner’s first public appearance since he resigned from Congress last October.
Organizers said they usually sell about 300 tickets. This year they sold over 500.
Boehner received a standing ovation at the dinner as he made his way to the podium.
“I don’t have any regrets about when I retired. I have no regrets about how I retired. Everyday I’m grateful that I’m not there,” he said amid laughter.
Boehner endorsed Ohio Gov. John Kasich in the presidential race during his speech, saying he has been friends with the governor for more than 30 years.
Organizers said voters are excited to join other party members to talk politics before Tuesday’s primary election.
“It’s just a lot of chaos, but a lot of excitement and I just think it’s just a high level of interest and that’s why we’re sold out tonight. Everybody is talking about it,” said Butler County Republican Party Treasurer Nancy Nix.
The dinner is taking place just a few blocks from the Savannah Center where GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump will make a campaign stop at 2 p.m. Sunday.
