Dubai, United Arab Emirates – the United States Naval vessel USNS Rappahannock, a fuel supply ship which refuels other ships at sea, reported that a speed boat began approaching the ship yesterday.

The U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said its Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain had opened fire on the approaching boat.

NPR reports:

“A U.S. consular official and an Emirati rescue official in Dubai told The Associated Press that one person was killed and three were wounded in the shooting. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident between the two allies.”

With tensions heightened with Iran and the Navy with fresh memory of the USS Cole attack a decade ago, the crew aboard the Rappahannacock was quick to mobilize into action.

Multiple warnings were issued to the boat to stop its course and turn away and when those messages were unheeded the Navy opened fire on the boat killing one person and injuring three others.

The passengers aboard the boat were Indians.
